for veterans!/FLOTUS/status/489499007761514498

Today, Michelle Obama gave the keynote address at the Unite for Veterans Summit in L.A..!/JoiningForces/status/489479078895173633

Veteran homelessness is indeed a serious issue that needs to be addressed. But you know what? So are sick and dying veterans languishing in the VA system. And FLOTUS made no mention of them:!/FLOTUS/status/489493444503425025

What about the idea that our veterans are spending months, or even years, waiting to be seen by a VA physician? Maybe, like her husband, she needs to find out about that stuff from the news. And with her busy social calendar, she just hasn’t had the time.!/FLOTUS/status/489494967509725184

And under this president, we’ve also watched corruption plague the Department of Veterans Affairs.!/FLOTUS/status/489497247831162880!/FLOTUS/status/489498012532494336

Our vets deserve a hell of a lot better than what this president has shown them.

1. This is Sean Azzariti. At 8 a.m. MT on Jan. 1, he became the first person in the U.S. to buy weed from a legal marijuana store in Colorado.

4. Azzariti served as a Marine in the Iraq War and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. He now works as a marijuana activist in Denver.

Azzariti became Colorado’s first legal weed purchaser through his connection to the Marijuana Policy Project, a group of activists who led the campaign to pass Amendment 64, which makes weed sales legal in the state.

Azzariti appeared in a TV ad last year discussing how marijuana would help alleviate his symptoms with PTSD. Despite efforts, only seven states have passed legislation that allows those suffering from PTSD to obtain medical marijuana legally. Colorado is not one of them.

8. Statement from Mason Tvert, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project and co-director of the Amendment 64 campaign:

“Millions of adults use marijuana in the United States, but only in Colorado will they be purchasing it from regulated businesses instead of in the underground market. Marijuana is objectively less harmful than alcohol, and Colorado is the first place in the country to start treating it that way.

“Making marijuana legal for adults is not an experiment. Marijuana prohibition is the experiment, and the results have been abysmal. If we can successfully regulate alcohol, we can surely regulate a less harmful substance like marijuana. Colorado is going to prove that regulating marijuana works, and it won’t be long before more states follow our lead.”

GOP Candidates Rick Perry And Michelle Bachmann Appear At Columbia, SC Veterans Day ParadeGOP Candidates Rick Perry And Michelle Bachmann Appear At Columbia, SC Veterans Day Parade

Dear Governor Rick Perry,

It’s admirable that you are concerned about the well-being of American citizens, particularly in regards to the threat terrorism poses to our safety. No one wants to see another 9/11 or Boston Marathon Bombing, as these were terrible tragedies that will forever haunt this country.

Accordingly, it’s important that we stay vigilant in order to prevent such attacks from occurring again. This is particularly true as the United States moves forward in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).

Likewise, it’s not that difficult to imagine a terrorist crossing the US border in order to plan and execute a terrorist attack. Drugs and guns cross that border frequently, and thousands of immigrants come across each month.

Simply put, immigration is a very serious issue in the United States, and one that requires immediate attention. Indeed, due to an inactive and obstinate Congress, President Obama will likely take executive action to address this problem.

Recently, you suggested that it’s a very “real possibility” that ISIS and other terrorist organizations are crossing the border through Mexico. Yet, even you admitted that there is no evidence to support this claim.

Moreover, the Pentagon immediately rejected your statements.

When you seem to make the false claim that a large number of terrorists are likely crossing the border, you generate fear and misconceptions among the populace. Yes, it is a possibility, but there is widespread evidence that this is not occurring.

As Joshua Keating of Slate puts it,

Intelligence officials have warned for some time that there’s a possibility of terrorists entering the US from Mexico, and there is indeed some evidence of groups like Hezbollah operating in South America.

It would be foolish, then, to completely rule out the possibility that terrorists have crossed into the United States from down Mexico way. But the frequent claims that this is already a major problem are, well, ridiculous.

Immigrants in the United States are already stigmatized enough, they do not need to be linked to the issue of terrorism.

Furthermore, the odds of an American dying in a terrorist attack is one in 20 million. There are a number of more sweeping issues we should be focusing on before terrorism.

This nation was founded and built by immigrants. We are all either recent immigrants or the descendants of people from somewhere else. “American” is not an ethnicity; it is an invention. Yet, new waves of immigrants have constantly been met with suspicion and animosity throughout the history of this country.

The truth is, the vast majority of immigrants coming into this country do so legally, but the word itself seems to imply the notion of illegality. With that said, no human being is illegal.

Likewise, there are a number of myths surrounding immigration that are perpetuated by the media and certain politicians, despite having no basis in reality. For example, many people seem to have the opinion that immigrants drain the economy, but the Council of Economic Advisors has shown that immigrants actually provide a huge boost to the economy.

If the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US were granted legal status, it would would add a cumulative $1.5 trillion to the US gross domestic product over 10 years.

So, instead of focusing on unsubstantiated hypotheticals, why don’t you pressure Congress to do its job and address this pressing matter?

There is an astronomical number of children from Central America being held at the border and facing deportation at present. Most of these children do not have legal consul, which means they have no one to speak for them.

Their stories are heartbreaking, and the statistics are staggering. Please, concentrate on their well-being, not on generating fear by spreading unfounded rumors.

Thank you.

Arizona Sheriff Paul Babeu is a rising star in conservative politics. Chosen “Sheriff of the Year” by the National Sheriff’s Association in 2011, Babeu has gained prominence for his work securing the border and reforming law enforcement in Pinal County.

An Iraq War veteran, Babeu served for over 20 years in the Army National Guard. In his race for Arizona’s 4th Congressional District, Babeu has won the support of leading Republicans and was warmly welcomed at the Conservative Political Action Conference this year.

In short, Sheriff Babeu is a successful conservative Republican. He is also gay.

Sheriff Babeu follows in the tradition of many conservatives who have stood up in communities, town halls, and in Congress for what’s right for the American people. Following in the mold of the late Senator Barry Goldwater (R-AZ), Arizonans have long supported the best candidate for office, regardless of their sexual orientation, including Log Cabin member and longtime Congressman Jim Kolbe (R-AZ).

Simply by being who we are – unapologetically pro-gay and unapologetically conservative – Log Cabin Republicans like Sheriff Babeu are helping to secure the freedoms America stands for, and that’s something we can all be proud of.

Roller coasters provide big thrills to people around the world. Amusement parks get swamped with those seeking to feel the rush that only the coaster experience can provide. Its part scary and part exciting! But while we take for granted that these things are completely safe, it turns out there have been some extremely horrific deaths that have occurred on roller coasters. Check these out:

‘Big Dipper’ Wooden Roller Coaster – 1972

This coaster was the main attraction at the Battersea Park Funfair in England. The amusement park had been running for 20 years, but on May of 1972, something tragic occurred. One of the ropes carrying a car snapped, causing a car at the top of the hill to roll backwards. The car was filled with kids and five of them became crushed to death while 13 others were injured.

Mindbender – 1986

The Mindbender just opened months prior in Alberta, Canada at Galaxyland, but disaster soon struck. Missing bolts in the last car were to blame. It flew off the track, slamming into a wall and then, with the safety bars releasing, sending passengers flying through the air, some to their death. Three dead and others were injured. Despite the tragedy, the ride is still open.

Fujin Raijin II – 2007

It was 2007 at Expoland in Osaka, Japan. The Fujin Raijin II left one college student dead and another 19 injured. It had derailed and the cars went flying off the tracks. Turns out the axles had not been replaced or even serviced for 15 years. Eventually the park shut down after people stopped going there.

Superman: Tower of Power – 2007

Six Flags Kentucky. June of 2007. The Superman: Tower of Power ride. While heading up the ride, teenage girls became thrashed by cables in the face and body. The support cables had broke and now the ride itself was smoking, while still climbing to the top. 13-year-old Kaitlyn Lasitter had both of her feet chopped clear off by the whipping cable. One was later able to be reattached. The other was so mangled it was not. Other passengers were injured as well.

Puff The Little Fire Dragon – 1989

This was supposed to be a kids ride that was safe. But Utah’s Lagoon Amusement Park’s Puff the Little Fire Dragon ride proved to be far from it. Despite it was one of the slowest rides in the whole park in 1989, the Little Red Dragon ride put a 6-year-old on the tracks after his restraints didnt hold. The four feet fall was not severe injury inducing, but it was when he went to get up, climbing back on the track, that the demonic Dragon ride circled back around and hit him on the head, killing the boy.

Ride of Steel – 2011

It was in Syracuse, New York, where Iraq War vet Sgt. James Hackemer rode the Ride of Steel coaster at the
Darien Lake Amusement Park. He had lost both legs in war, due to a roadside IED, but made it back alive. Naturally he wanted to ensure he was fastened in securely due to his condition. But when the ride took off, it went over one of the small hills, and thats when the Sgt. came out of the safety restraints, falling to his death…

Cyclone – 1988

Coney Island. 1988. The Cyclone. A classic wooden coaster. One person was riding it at the time and he was a maintenance worker. Thinking it would be okay to ignore the safety bar and proceed to stand up on the ride, he was quickly thrown from it, plummeting 30 feet onto a crossbeam where he instantly died.

Water World USA – 1997

Water World USA. 1997. 33 high school seniors. Graduation. They all celebrated by crowding onto a water slide. Unfortunately the slide could not take all the weight. It collapsed. One teen died, all the others were injured, 17 of which received their diplomas in wheelchairs a few weeks later.

Action Park

Action Park. The sight of the most dangerous water park in America, with a string of accidents occurring from 1978 to 1996. Drownings included a 15-year-old in 1982, a 20-year-old in 1984, and an 18-year-old in 1987. Action Park closed after the lawsuits set it and lack of attendance. In 1998 it opened back up as Mountain Creek Waterpark. In 2014, apparently feeling enough time had passed, they changed their name back to Action Park.

Haunted Castle – 1984

May, 1984. Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. The Haunted Castle. A fire breaks out inside. People ran out and escaped harm. But eight teens remained trapped inside. They ended up becoming burned to death, their bodies unrecognizable once recoverd. It was concluded that arson was the likely reason the fire had occurred.

When Brandon Friedman took to Twitter to plant the seeds for another attack on Bowe Bergdahl’s whistle-blowing platoon mates, his bio proudly announced his role as deputy assistant secretary for public affairs at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

What if [Bergdahl’s] platoon was long on psychopaths and short on leadership?” he tweeted, before calling for everyone to “withhold judgment” about allegations that Bergdahl deserted. “I’m not a fan of such speculation,” he added. Uh huh.

And then Friedman scrubbed his Twitter bio. Here’s the Google cache from Jun 3, 2014:

Here’s how it appears now, after his “blame the platoon” tweets:

Former Texas Rep. Ron Paul has been attracting negative attention all day for a tweet he sent Monday morning regarding the death of former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle at the hands of an Iraq War veteran. But get used to off-the-cuff Twitter activity from the former presidential candidate: Paul, 77, is now running his own Twitter feed, a spokesperson says.

“He runs it,” said Campaign for Liberty communications director Megan Stiles, who is handling Paul’s press requests since he retired. She clarified that Paul started handling his own tweets “since he left office.”

“Chris Kyle’s death seems to confirm that ‘he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.’ Treating PTSD at a firing range doesn’t make sense,” Paul tweeted on Monday. Kyle was shot and killed by Eddie Ray Routh, a veteran of the Iraq War who had post-traumatic stress disorder, at a shooting range in Texas.

The tweet outraged people on Twitter, particularly conservatives. Commentary editor John Podhoretz called it “appalling”; “you really are vile,” tweeted Republican strategist Rick Wilson.

Paul’s tweet seemed to prompt the return of the Ron Paul Newsletters Twitter feed, which was active during his presidential campaign and tweets quotes from the controversial newsletters published under his name in past decades that frequently included racist or homophobic passages (Paul and his aides have maintained that he wasn’t the author of the newsletters). It had been lying dormant since March.

UPDATE: Paul posted this statement on his Facebook page on Monday evening:

As a veteran, I certainly recognize that this weekend’s violence and killing of Chris Kyle were a tragic and sad event. My condolences and prayers go out to Mr. Kyle’s family. Unconstitutional and unnecessary wars have endless unintended consequences. A policy of non-violence, as Christ preached, would have prevented this and similar tragedies. -REP
