Welcoming a new generation of volunteers
Every summer, the Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) at the VA North Texas Health Care System opens its doors to a new group of youth volunteers eager to give back. CDCE connects the community with the hospital, bringing students, families and volunteers to help Veterans in meaningful ways. From coordinating service projects to helping young people discover their passions, the CDCE team works behind the scenes to make sure every volunteer feels welcomed, supported and part of something bigger.
This year’s six-week Youth Volunteer Program placed students across various departments, but many were drawn to the Community Living Center (CLC). Once inside, they quickly became part of the heartbeat of the unit. Their days were filled with playing dominoes, chatting in the hallways, sharing laughs during board games and simply being present with Veterans who appreciated a listening ear and a brightened afternoon.
The Veterans loved the energy the students brought. Their presence encouraged more social interaction, helping Veterans come out of their rooms, connect with others and enjoy those special moments of companionship. A simple domino game often sparked genuine conversation, shared stories, lessons learned and new friendships formed.
Voices from the volunteers
Youth volunteer Natalie Dannel shared how much the experience meant to her: “Volunteering in the Community Living Center gave me the chance to get to know some amazing Veterans. Hearing their stories and spending time with them taught me so much. It was an experience I’ll always be grateful for and one I’ll never forget.”
Cannan Eyassu reflected on the personal growth he experienced during his time in the CLC: “Every hour I spent in the CLC strengthened my communication skills and helped me build meaningful connections with Veterans. Supporting them taught me the value of respect and compassion, and working alongside physical therapists, occupational therapists and nurses gave me a deeper understanding of how each role contributes to their care.”
Service that lasts a lifetime
For these students, the Youth Volunteer Program is more than community service, it’s personal. They get to know Veterans, learn from them and witness firsthand what service truly looks like in everyday moments. At the end of six weeks, many leave with a better sense of who they are, where they’re headed and just how powerful simple kindness can be.
The power of connection
Year after year, CDCE’s Youth Volunteer Program reminds everyone—staff, Veterans and volunteers alike—that connection is powerful. Sometimes, the greatest impact comes from the smallest gestures: a game, a conversation or a shared laugh. These young volunteers carry that spirit with them long after summer ends, and the Veterans remember it too.
Every volunteer has the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of our nation’s Veterans. Learn more about VA’s Student Volunteer Program.
